Starting therapy can come with a lot of questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about working together.
FAQs
Getting Started
-
During our initial session, we will discuss your history (family, relationships, etc.) as well as what brought you to therapy. We will determine what type of therapy is best suited for your needs and decide on the frequency of sessions. We will do this at a pace that feels comfortable for you. My primary goal is always to first establish safety and comfort in our sessions.
-
The frequency of our sessions will be discussed during our initial session, as this varies depending on presenting concerns and needs. Typically, clients meet with me once a week or bi-weekly.
-
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that helps you understand how stress, trauma and life experiences affect your nervous system. Alongside conversation, we explore physical sensation and patterns in the body to support healing, regulation, and meaningful change.
-
Many people aren’t sure if therapy is right for them or where to start. Booking a 15-min free consultation is an excellent way to start. Click the contact page and book with me directly to find out more before you invest in an initial session.
Is This a Good Fit?
-
I work with adults of all genders who are navigating the emotional impact of life’s most challenging experiences. Many of my clients are coping with cancer, chronic illness, pregnancy and fertility challenges/loss, pregnancy loss, termination for medical reasons (TFMR), caregiving responsibilities, children with high needs, grief, trauma, burnout and major life transitions.
While I am certified in perinatal mental health and have a special interest in women’s wellness, I welcome anyone seeking support through illness, loss, uncertainty and healing.
-
No. Many of my clients come to therapy because they are experiencing the impact of difficult life events rather than what they would consider “trauma.” This might include chronic illness, cancer, pregnancy or fertility challenges, pregnancy or infant loss, child illness, TFMR, grief, burnout or major life transitions. Somatic therapy can help you reconnect with yourself, process what you’ve been through and move forward with greater ease and self-compassion.
-
Absolutely. Many of the people I work with are highly capable, sometimes over-functioning and successful in their everyday lives. From the outside, they may appear to be managing well, but internally, they feel overwhelmed, angry, anxious, numb, or emotionally exhausted. You don’t have to wait until your body is in crisis. You deserve support now. If you are asking yourself this question, chances are your body is already giving you gentle nudges that it needs more support.
-
Yes! Life-altering experiences like cancer, auto-immune disorders, chronic illness, pregnancy loss, TMFR, fertility challenges, caring for a child with health complications, grief or other significant transitions can leave lasting impacts long after the initial crisis has passed. Many people find themselves isolated or changed by what they’ve been through. Therapy can provide a supportive space to process your experience and reconnect with yourself and move forward in a way that honours both your healing and your resilience.
-
You don’t have to wait until life feels settled to reach out for support. While therapy can help process the past, it can also help anchor you while you are actively navigating a difficult experience. Somatic therapy can help you care for your nervous system and feel less alone during an incredibly challenging time. We can focus on helping you get through today while also protecting your body from a crash.
